Do you remember where you were when certain moments that changed the wrestling world occurred?
For instance, do you remember Hogan turning heel at Bash at the Beach '96?
Or when Hogan turned down Ted Dibiase's attempt to purchase the WWF Championship?
This BTB series will look at a number of these "angles" (or storylines) that changed the face of professional wrestling, and then tweaks them ever so slightly to show us a possible glimpse into what "may have been"!
So, sit back, relax, and let's start up the old time machine, and step back into a (possibly) forgotten era of wrestling, and see your favorite superstars in a whole new light!

Alternate Angle #1: The Higher Power
The date was June 7th, 1999, the world waited with bated breath to learn the identity of the "Higher Power", the mastermind behind the Ministry, and the Corporation's seeming alliance with them. As Raw came on the air, the large group entered the ring, and then proceeded to underwhelm the millions of fans watching by having Vince himself revealed as the mastermind behind it all. Millions of fans worldwide, and many of those in attendance were angered at being duped by such an "obvious" choice.
So, what would have happened if it was not so obvious? What if it were someone not so expected? Let us journey back to that night, and witness a bold, new choice; one that would change the WWF forever. -----
Monday Night Raw, June 7th, 1999
Fans had sold out the arena in record time for one reason alone. To finally learn the identity of the Higher Power. Undertaker and Paul Bearer had promised for weeks to reveal who this person was and now the time had come.
Wrestling fans the world over speculated as to whom it would be. Many names were thrown about, but when it came right down to it, fans were stumped. Yet, in this very ring tonight (as Vince liked to say), every wrestling fan alive would know once and for all.
The Undertaker, and the rest of the Ministry made their way down to the ring. The fans booed loudly as the Undertaker and his minions slowly entered the ring and stood in the middle of it. Suddenly, they all parted, and there in the middle of the ring stood a masked figure, draped in a long cowl/cloak combination outfit.
Shane McMahon stepped forward, mic in hand, and brazenly challenged his father to come to the ring to witness the unveiling. Vince suddenly appeared on the Titantron, Stephanie sitting beside him on a sofa. Vince, with a sneer of contempt for his son, spoke:
"Son, I want you to know that I don't like this one damned bit! You want me down there so that your friends can run back here and steal Stephanie away again! to hell with that! I'm not budging an inch! I'm watching closely right from here! So, let us all see just whoever this goon is, so that I can turn around and fire his ass!"
The fans in attendance roar with applause at Vince's words, but Shane shrugs them off, as if they meant absolutely nothing to him. Shane silently hands the microphone to Undertaker, who turns and addresses both Vince and Stephanie.
"Vince, you are deluded if you think you stand a snowball's chance in Hell of ridding the WWF of the person who stands beside me! They have promised me that it will be you that suffers! You and your precious little girl!"
At the conclusion of his statement, Undertaker laughs with such a deep, gutteral sound, that it sends shivers down everyone's spine. Undertaker quietly hands the microphone to the mysterious stranger, pauses for a moment, and then grins evilly. Undertaker walks behind the stranger, and then removes the cowl and cloak. As the disguise falls away, the fans are left in utter shock and dismay! The person standing before them is none other than Jake "The Snake" Roberts!

With a steely, gravelly tone in his voice, Jake speaks for the very first time in a long time. "Vince, Vince, Vince!" Jake says with a sinister chuckle, "I guess you weren't expecting me, were you? Then again, I get the distinct impression that no one was expecting me at all!" The fans begin to boo loudly, but this hardly deters Jake, as he continues his tirade, undaunted.
"Vince, you think you're the man in control of everything! Think again! You don't control a damned thing! I am the Higher power, McMahon, and you're nothing but a pawn in a very, very dark game."
No sooner does Jake finish speaking then do the lights in the secluded dressing room where Vince and Stephanie are go off. The room is plunged into total darkness, and the only way that fans can tell of what's going on are the incessant screams coming from Stephanie (calling for Vince) and Vince (who is trying to find where Stephanie is).
The moment the lights come back on is when the truth is ultimately revealed: Stephanie is nowhere to be seen! Vince is now seething with rage, and yells at Jake that he is coming to the ring to get him for "stealing his baby" which only makes Jake smirk at the camera in a truly evil fashion all the more.
I love the idea. It almost reminds me of a more specific version of Guest Booker.
The only criticism is I'm not sure how much I like the idea of a guy as irrelevant as Roberts was a the time being thrust into such an important role where the fans were expecting something major. This is the same guy who at the time single handedly may have ruined the horrible Heroes Of Wrestling promotion due to his drunk/high escapade.
