The History Of The CornellVerse

North American Wrestling History
Wrestling started becoming a real profession in the US around the 1960s, which is generally known as the "Traditional Era". Prior to this it had been little more than a sideshow attraction, but the 60s saw the emergence of several regional territories, with wrestlers travelling from promotion to promotion. It was hard for wrestlers to become real superstars, as they rarely stayed in one place long enough to really become dominant, but some carved out good reputations for themselves and earned great livings - amongst these were men like Dan Stone and George DeColt, who would later go on to be successful promoters. The major territories at this time included Championship Wrestling from Boston (run by Gene Plumelli), Dick The Devastator's All-American Florida Wrestling, the Tri-State area's American Pro Wrestling Federation, California Pro Wrestling (headed by Preston Holt), and the Texas Wrestling League.

The end of this situation began in around 1978, when a relatively new promotion called Supreme Wrestling Federation, under the leadership of a young promoter called Richard Eisen, began building up an impressive roster by offering long-term contracts to some of the most popular wrestlers, which was unheard of in those days. By 1980, SWF was able to put on wrestling's first pay-per-view event, which marked the beginning of the "Supreme Era". SWF became the national powerhouse, with clever marketing and showmanship making the smaller promotions look amateurish. By the mid 80s, almost all the regional promotions had been put out of business, and SWF was almost entirely dominant, with their headline wrestlers like Sam Strong and Rip Chord being national superstars.

It was over 15 years before another promotion managed to rise and take on the might SWF, and this happened in December 1996 when Hollyweird Grappling Company debuted, kicking off the "Modern Era". With a millionaire funding them, HGC brought in Strong and Chord (who had both left SWF many years ago) on big money contracts to provide star power, and populated the rest of their roster with former SWF stars (like the Vessey Brothers) and the cream of the independent leagues (such as Ricky Dale Johnson and Liberty). The tactic worked, as they were able to go head-to-head with SWF almost immediately, and were accepted as a viable competitor by the fans. The most recent twist happened in late 2004, when HGC were taken over by famous wrestler Tommy Cornell, and renamed Total Championship Wrestling.

Supreme Wrestling Federation

The Supreme Wrestling Federation are the most famous wrestling promotion in the world, and have been the dominant force in American wrestling for over twenty years.

Creating by the ruthless and controversial Richard Eisen, he used his concept of "sports entertainment" to almost single-handedly destroy the territorial system that had existing in America for many years and create the most successful promotion that had ever existed.

Recently the SWF have had to deal with the second genuine threat to their dominance for many years, after Danger and Violence Extreme (DaVE) was bought of in late 2007, Total Championship Wrestling stepped up their game even more and have emerged as a rival who are willing to go head-to-head with them.

He is best known as one half of The Samoan Wildboyz tag team, alongside Kid Toma. A daring worker with a lot of heart, Akima is one to watch for the future.

That relationship ended toward the end of 2006, when Jones switched allegiances to become the silent muscle backing up Frederique Antonio Garcia. A little known fact is that Andre is also a world calibre volleyball player.

Under that name, he was one half of the "Flex and Pecs" tag team, a duo who first came to people's attention with USPW, but became nationally known when they joined SWF in 2005. They split up in August 2006, having gotten lost in the promotion's heavily populated tag division, and Garcia debuted his new ring name and character just a few months later; the change clearly boosted his career, as pretty soon he was rising up the card and had become one of the most entertaining acts in the promotion.

However, it is undisputable that he does have a magic "X factor" about him which makes him an incredibly effective heel, and that might explain why the SWF took a big risk (and upset half the locker room) by signing him in 2006.

"Big Money" debuted during the summer under the management of fellow DAVE alumni Emma Chase, making an instant impact by destroying fan favourite Lobster Warrior on pay-per-view during a post-match assault.

He is highly respected within the wrestling community, as is called "The Iron Man" by his peers due to the legendary work ethic and resilience; in two decades of work for the SWF you can count the amount of shows he has missed through injury or illness on one hand.

Biography: Eric Eisen is the youngest son of SWF owner Richard Eisen. Being brought up around the wrestling industry, it was unquestioned that he would end up working in the business, but what surprised many was that he chose to pursue a career as an active wrestler rather than the easier path of becoming an announcer or backstage worker. He's not a great worker by any means, even after training with some of the best wrestlers around, but he is respected by his peers for his strong work ethic and attitude. He is the complete opposite of his character, a man who constantly hides behind Enforcer Roberts.

Biography: James "Mainstream" Hernandez is a charismatic Canadian high flier with a huge amount of potential. He was a member of the initial MAW roster when the company first began, although he was originally a tag team wrestler, working alongside Erik Strong as Call To Action. That lasted only a few months before Mainstream went solo. As well as improving as a worker under Rip Chord's expert eye, Hernandez found a lot of success as a singles wrestler in the promotion; winning both of the first two Rip Chord Invitational tournaments and the Mid Atlantic Championship title, cementing his place as the brightest prospect that MAW had. In February 2007, at Rip Chord's urging, Hernandez headed off to test his newly-polished skills in the wider wrestling world, first heading for RIPW, SWF's development promotion. In January 2008 he got the call up to the main roster.

Biography: Face-painted powerhouse Jim Force is a former bodybuilder, who first came to attention with SWF in the 1990s, winning two North American titles and coming very close to the world title on several occasions. He was eventually released in 2000, when even the great SWF booking team of that era could no longer hide the fact that his in-ring skills were sub par compared to the rest of the roster. He wound up in USPW by 2002, where he was a former four time champion, and was one of their biggest names. But in November 2007 money lured him back to the clutches of Richard Eisen's SWF.

Biography: Joseph Jiminez Garcia is the latest gimmick employed by hispanic wrestler Mikel Jiminez. He first came to fame as Pecs, one half of the Flex and Pecs tag team, wrestling in USPW and the SWF before the duo was broken up. Once he was separated from his more talented partner (Anthony Alonso Garcia) he began to struggle; being repackaged as "The Spanish Phenom" Mikel Alonso did nothing for his career, and he would then go through another change to become Super Starfish, the fouth member of the Underwater Union. In truth, the character was just created as the catalyst for the break-up of the stable, "the commotion in the ocean", and within months the character was history. They then decided to have him repackaged as Joseph Jiminez Garcia, Anthony's half brother as his aid in winning matches as well as being an occasional tag team partner.

He was trained in the famous SWF training camp, graduating in 2005 in the excellent class that also included Marc DuBois and the Bumfhole brothers. Making his SWF debut in December 2005, Kid Toma spent 2006 establishing his Samoan Wildboyz tag team with Akima Brave as one of the most exciting duos in wrestling.

Death Row look set to be a big part of SWF, already having beaten former two time tag champs Jumbo Shrimp and Calamari Kid.

Prior to joining the SWF, his best work had been done in Canada, where he was an integral part of the CGC promotion, first under his real name, and later as "Lobster Man", his own creation and a prototype for the character that would eventually lead him to stardom in America. After years of sterling midcard work, 2007 saw the SWF finally start a big push for Lobby with the "commotion in the ocean" storyline; the break-up of the Underwater Union gave him both huge momentum and positioned him well as a top singles contender.

Just two months later he defeated Warrior's stable mate Calamari Kid to win his first title, the Shooting Star championship.

Biography: "Blue Blood" Paul Huntingdon. is a wrestler who, even though he is still young, already has a lengthy and varied career behind him. He got involved in the business at just 14, doing various odd jobs for what independent promotions would let him help. By 18 he was doing ringside work as a manager, playing a snobbish rich kid under the name Lord Geoffrey Windameer. Using the contacts he had already built up he began training with a variety of different wrestlers, and eventually got a big break when he was signed by RIPW, the SWF's feeder league, in 2006. His time there, working as Aristocrat, saw him develop quickly from an inconsistent spot monkey into a pretty solid competitor, and in December 2007 he got his dream move when he was called up to the main SWF roster. He debuted on the very final show of the year under his new ring name.

Biography: "Psyche Out" Remmy Skye is a youngster from Georgia, who has become something of a cult figure with Coastal Zone Championship Wrestling. Debuting in 2003 while just 19 years old, Skye quickly won over the fans with a combination of his oddly hypnotic charisma and his insane daredevil wrestling style. He is often referred to as the "King Of The Ladder Match", which is down to the fact that he has been involved in some incredible ladder matches over the years, especially with Fox Mask and Plague. After three years in the promotion he became extremely loyal and refused 2 offers from the SWF, eventually he decided to pack up and leave, after a dispute about him not winning the title and he was signed by the SWF.

Biography: Runaway Train is most famous for being SWF's premier monster heel since 2000, a status he earned thanks to a legendary angle when he put Christian Faith into temporary retirement with a powerbomb off a sound stage. Prior to his SWF career, he worked under his real name, Barry Bowen. While his potential was obvious, he didn't really accomplish as much as was expected, with a short main event run with CGC in Canada being the highlight. He has been an almost constant SWF main event presence since 2004, but after having his second world title reign ended by Jack Bruce in August 2007 it does appear that the ageing warrior is slowly being phased out, having his monster heel status transferred to Vengeance instead.

Biography: The Wrath Of God (AKA Jack Giedroyc) is a very solid British wrestler who has charisma to spare, and is a distant cousin of Canadian worker Joey Poison. He built up a reputation for excellence on the UK scene over the course of many years, which led to a huge break in 2006 when he was signed by American promotion DAVE. He was an instant hit with the fans, and by October had already gotten his first taste of gold, scoring a hugely impressive pinfall victory over Big Cat Brandon to win the Brass Knuckles championship. What could have been a career unsettling event - the demise of DAVE in April 2007 - proved to be little more than a bump in the road though, as that actually opened the door for him to be signed up by the world's biggest promotion, the Supreme Wrestling Federation.

Biography: BJ O'Neill is from England originally, but also has Samoan heritage. She spent many years on the Southern Californian wrestling scene as a valet, where she developed a solid reputation as a charismatic, beautiful ringside manager. This apparently put her on the radar of the USA's biggest promotion, SWF, and in 2006 she was given a development contract with the new Rhode Island Pro Wrestling company, with a view to eventually moving to the main SWF roster. That big move happened in November 2007, when she was brought up to manage the Samoan Wildboyz.

Biography: Emma Chase is an ultra-charismatic and beautiful young manager, who was discovered by DAVE owner Phil Vibert when she was still an unknown on the independent scene. After becoming a big name with DAVE under the name Easy Emma, she branched out into other promotions, and made waves in NYCW (as Emma Extreme) and USPW (under her real name). She is widely regarded as one of the best managers in North America, and that prompted DAVE to sign her to a lucrative written contract in 2006 to keep her from being stolen. Unfortunately that did little good, as the promotion itself went out of business the following year. That left the door open for the SWF to finally sign their long-time target, and Emma debuted during the summer in the role of a power-hungry sports agent; her first client was revealed a few weeks after her debut as fellow DAVE alumni Big Cat Brandon, working as "Big Money" Brandon James.

Biography: Jerry Eisen is the eldest son of SWF chief Richard Eisen. He is the only male member of the Eisen family who has not competed in the ring at some point, although he did work as a referee when he was very young as part of his induction into the business, but instead he has made his career by working as the play-by-play man on SWF shows. He is not especially great at it, but he's not awful by any means either. It is widely expected that Jerry will eventually succeed his father as SWF owner. In 2007 he was a focal point of the disasterous "SWF election" storyline where he and his brother Eric competed as to who would "take over" from their father. Jerry represented traditional values in the story, and although he performed well the story ultimately bombed badly.

She wasn't involved in wrestling prior to her marriage, but when her husband joined SWF in 2002, Richard Eisen instantly saw her star potential, and soon hired her too.

Biography: Peter Michaels is considered to be one of the greatest wrestling announcers of all time, and is hugely respected for the way that he can both help tell a story in the ring and relay information to the viewer. He first came to fame as a young announcer with the Texas Wrestling League, and when that company went out of business in 1995, he was swiftly snapped up by the Supreme Wrestling Federation, who had wanted him for many years. In 2007 he became head booker of the promotion in the wake of the departure of Sam Keith. And even after that he still is on the announce booth.

Biography: The Guru is a manager from Maine, who has found fame as one of the Supreme Wrestling Federation's main heel characters. His most celebrated partnership is with Runaway Train, who he has been managing ever since the monster's debut in 2000, and has led to the SWF World championship.

Big Cat Brandon Returns?

SWF Star "Big Money" Brandon James used to be a former a DaVE Unified champion, until the belt was retired in the Gimmick of a wild animal, Big Cat Brandon, now he looks set to return to that gimmick, complete with face paint. The SWF plan on making this move as he enters the Main Event in the chase for the world title.

Interview With Runaway Train.

Recently I (Steve Peer) had the privileged to interview a major SWF star and former World Champion, Runaway Train Also Known by his real name, Michael Trane.

Steve Peer: Hello Mr. Trane, thanks for coming. how are you doing?

Michael Trane: I'm doing pretty good, thanks.

SP: Well, let's get down to the questions. Now, in Professional Wrestling, most wrestlers have a reason, or a hero, or a match that got them to wrestle, who or what was yours?

MT: Erm, well actually, I have to say I was a huge fan of Sam Strong, the Biggest Strongamaniac in the world, but at the age of 9, my Family had to move to Canada because my Dad was in hospital and to take my mind off things, I would go to Canadian Wrestling Federation shows and I would cheer on George Decolt and Whipper Spencer Marks, The Calgary Wolverines. If I had to choose a match it would be Sam Strong Vs. Bruce the Giant in 2005 at Scars and Stripes. Because I was the guest Referee.

SP: You mentioned your dad being in Hospital?

MT: Yes, when I was 8 he was diagnosed with Testicular cancer, when he passed away, I was only 13, I was so depressed, I started eating alot! But the turning point came when I was in my only one year from the prom, I can't be a fatty in a tux, so I took up Boxing using some of my dad inheritance, we were relatively well off, he left me $23,000 and I lost alot of weight.

SP: Well that is a sad story, who trained you in wrestling?

MT: I mentioned being a fan of the Calgary Wolverines, the best tag team of all time, well Whipper Spencer Marks, his father, Steven, trained me for two years, it cost me $20,000 I was off by $4,000 but He still trained me, I learnt very fast and it only took me two years to get to a decent standard. As you can understand I was very upset when he passed.

SP: wow, you where trained by a legend, but how did you become a legend by making it in the SWF?

MT: well, It wasn't easy, I started Indy bookings in 1997, and I caught the eye of Professor Nero, the former SWF Talent scout, and he signed me up, he said it was due to my size and "Superstar Look." I got in in 1999 and was on their once-a-month development show "Back To The Future" I was almost instantly put in the main event when I made it to the Main Roster.

SP: So you have been wrestling since 1997, you became I mega star when you took out Christian Faith in February 2000 can you tell the other fans a bit more about this storyline?

MT: Christian Faith was, and still is, in my mind the best active wrestler on the planet behind Tommy Cornell and I almost ended his career when I tore some skin on his forehead off by accident, but after months of promo's he made his ring return in July of that year at The Supreme Challenge 23 to face me in a match. Which he won.

SP: What has been you most faviroute match of your career?

MT: In March 2007 I Faced Jack Bruce at Awesome Impact and I retained my world title in a last man standing match, I loved the ending where I Put a Car On Top Of Him!

SP: Yes, well If you don't mind me asking, how much do you earn a year, before taxes?

MT: I earn 216,000 a year, but Christian Faith is at the top of the payroll as he earns 544,320 and seriously you should see his house it is extremely nice!

SP: You speak very highly of Faith, is he your best friend in the locker room?

MT: I Get along with a lot of the guys in the back, me and Faith have a great friendship, as do me and Eric Eisen. Richard is OK, he seems to like me, I am great friends with Ana Garcia. My wife hates him but I like to go see Jack Bruce alot, I would say he is my best friend in the back.

SP: Now Trane, this is the big question, do you think you have another title run left in you?

MT: To be honest, no, I have been offered the title 3 times during my career but I only accepted it once, because I don't perform as well under pressure, and my skills aren't that good anyway (Laughs) but I also must look to the future, I don't want to become even more washed up. I plan on retiring by the end of the year. Then I have plans on doing one last tour with PGHW in 2009. So I will spend a few months in Japan then I will retire before I reach the age of 46.

SP: Thanks for your time, have fun in the ring.

MT: Thanks, take care.
