According to my English Professor, who has won various awards, Stephen King is one of the last true great writers. It’s agreed upon by many other academics as well. King isn’t a genre writer, he can do a wide variety of things, and has. The man who wrote Carrie and Shawshank Redemption obviously has some range. Ask Hunter S. Thompson about range and he’d be clueless.
I know what you are getting at though. Popular authors generally suck. Of all that you have listed Stephen King is the only one I have read from and I’ve only read his books when I was a teenager. I do know of many people who come off as educated for reading every popular modern author out there and I agree that that is annoying.
In the same vein, I hate people who read trendy authors (Chuck Palahniuk is definitely one of them) and then pretend that they have an understanding of literature. Hunter S. Thompson is about as trendy as you can get.
