Would it be totally unreasonable for them to adopt a policy like the NFL, where the kids have to be at least three years removed from high school?

Probably, I guess. I mean, I think the NFL rule is in place largely because teenagers simply CAN'T match up to NFL athletes in such a physical game, and it protects the players -- whereas the NBA is a much less physical game, and rookies are able to come in right away and excel.
