I also think hitters werent as patient as they were now. I dont think hitters worked the count the way they do now. Basically, I think the average pitches per plate appearance is higher now, so a pitcher can only get 6 or 7 innings out of a 100/110-pitch limit, whereas you could easily throw a complete game with 90 or so pitches back in the day.

Plus, the mound was higher, ballparks were bigger, and hitters werent lifting weights yet.
