To me, "Most Valuable Player" is more given to an individual, but refers to how he did in a team sense. How valuable was he to his team? On the other hand, "Most Outstanding Player" is more looking solely at the player by himself and evaluating his performance. How the team did as a whole really doesn't mean a whole lot.

Take this example: Barry Sanders on the Detroit Lions. He was an "Outstanding Player". His individual stats are viewed by some to make him one of, if not the, best RB in the game. But how valuable was he to his team? To me, a team doesn't accomplish a whole lot (in the NFL anyway) if they can't even make it into the playoffs, something the Lions just don't do. I don't know how "Valuable" Barry really could be viewed if his team was finishing 8-8 or below each season.

That's my take on it anyway.
