Why would you let your top guy compete in anything outside your organization, if he gets injured there, you're fucked. Injuries happen in sports yes, but you can limit them if you don't let your fighters compete in other organizations besides your own.
Dana was willing to give him quite a bit, Fedor was asking for quite a bit more. |

Fedor was wanting to compete in Sambo which is like the national sport of Russia. It is not a full contact sport really and not many injuries result from it. Fedor has been doing Sambo much longer than MMA.
The UFC is notorius for providing unreasonable contracts and that can by highlighted by several recent big names that have had problems with them: Randy Couture, Andrei Arlovski, & Tito Ortiz to name a few.
Fedor and the UFC both had some unreasonable demands but I don't think Fedor can be blamed fully.
