Re: God! No! Mike Martz!

Personally, I'm a bit surprised the 49ers didn't hold out for Cam Cameron. The way he helped develop and utilize Tomlinson-Gates seems like an obvious best-case for Gore-Davis -- hell, Drew Brees even looked for a time like Smith has looked the past couple years. Of course, maybe they did approach him and he said no.

This whole business about shuffling coordinators has always seemed overblown to me -- that is, it's certainly something that can hinder the development of a player or a unit, but quite frankly it's often unavoidable. I don't really see how you could hire a candidate at offensive coordinator, for example, and ensure that he's not going to pursue a head coaching job down the road. I certainly wouldn't pass up a GOOD offensive coordinator simply for fear that he'd leave. Now, I understand that Martz is the kind of guy whose name will probably come up again for head coaching jobs down the line, but if the 49ers can get even two seasons out of him, and he can implement a scheme and make that offense work, it'll at least give them confidence.
