I think that if you look sport by sport, the average basketball player makes more than the average player in any other sport. The main reason for this is that there are less players in the NBA than in the NFL, MLB, or NHL. In the NBA, each player gets a bigger chuck of the "salary pie" than in the other sports.
I think if you added up all the salaries, MLB would lead all the other sports in salaries paid to players. The NFL probably gets more money from tv/radio contracts, but MLB gets MUCH more from ticket sales, since there are 10 times as many games. also, a lot of the stadiums have "stuff" to do in them that football stadiums dont have, such as batting cages, pitching booths, bars, restaurants, etc. Basically, baseball stadiums have more revenue generating amenities than football stadiums, and they get to generate that revenue over the course of 162 games. Plus, sales of baseball hats and jerseys are probably on par with football merchandise sales.
So, there's more emoney to pay players with, so the players in total make more.
If it wasnt so close to leaving work time, I owuld actually look this up...maybe when I get home... |
