The preseason is neccessary at 4 games so that the coaches can evaluate the depth chart players. Like last night to my peril I stayed up to watch the Colts and Bengals, Palmer, Johnson, C Johnson, TJ etc and Manning, Marvin, Reggie and Addai didn't even suit up however there were some rookie players who need NFL experience and some players who were playing for a spot on the roster who were really going at it and need these games as do the coaches who can only evaluate them so much in camp.
What is the difference between getting laid out in the preseason to getting laid out in Game 1 like Dan Morgan and Trent Green last year? Football is a mans game and people are gonna get hurt. Thats why getting the roster spots right is essential so the back ups can do the job that can't be done in 2 games when you're starters are gonna need playing time too.
I think 4 is just the right amount.
