This is a pretty interesting issue. Obviously, Jeff Bagwell is NOT a $17 million a year player. I wouldn't say he's even a $5 million a year player. Of course the Astros don't want to pay him that, especially if he's going to be hurt most of the year anyway (which he probably will)

This is kinda like what the Orlando Magic went through with Grant Hill for a few years. He played like a total of 10 games in 3 years, and was making the maximum salary, so it toally handcuffed the team. Of course, it's different in basketball because there's a salary cap involved, but same general principle
