Favre ready for ankle surgery

Green Bay star Brett Favre will have ankle surgery in the next two weeks, says Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

The 37-year-old quarterback skipped an operation at the end of last season and had yet to reschedule.

But McCarthy, who went 8-8 in his first season in charge of the Packers, said: "We're looking to have it done in the next couple of weeks.

McCarthy added he was "absolutely" certain a Favre will return to fitness in time for training camp this summer.

Favre confirmed he would return for his 17th season with Green Bay on 2 February.

He has started 257 consecutive games including the play-offs, an NFL record for quarterbacks.

Favre broke Dan Marino's record for career completions (4,967) in 2006 and is closing in on his marks for touchdown passes (420) and yards passing (61,361).
