New Years Revolution - Jan 7, 2007

The Official New Years Revolution Discussion Thread

The card

WWE Championship Match:
Umaga vs. John Cena (c)

At New YearÂ’s Revolution, it will be title vs. streak when John Cena defends the WWE Championship against the undefeated Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga.

The challenge for this match was originally laid out on Raw one night after Survivor Series. While Umaga was disqualified at the pay-per-view, the Samoan Bulldozer went on a rampage and looked dominant by destroying everything in his path. Because of this, and because no one has been able to challenge Umaga since his debut in April, manager Armando Alejandro Estrada felt that the only thing left for his undefeated protégé to do was become WWE Champion. Moments after Estrada laid out the challenge, Cena stormed to the ring and quickly accepted before staring down Umaga.

The next week, Jonathan Coachman announced that the battle between Cena and Umaga would take place at New YearÂ’s Revolution. Later that night, after The Champ defeated Chris Masters in a Master Lock Challenge, the Bulldozer stormed the ring looking to get it on early. Cena met him when he did, and the two men engaged in a lengthy brawl that took almost a dozen people to break up.

In over eight months of competition, no one has been able to defeat the dangerous Samoan Bulldozer. With the WWE Championship at stake on Jan. 7, will that streak continue or will John Cena finally put a blemish on UmagaÂ’s record?

Tag Team Match
D-Generation X vs. World Tag Team Champions Rated-RKO

At New YearÂ’s Revolution, the rivalry between D-Generation X and Rated-RKO will reach its peak when the two teams clash once again.

The rivalry began back in October, when Edge & Randy Orton bonded together on the premise of ending DXÂ’s reign of terror on Raw. They were successful at Cyber Sunday, as special guest referee Eric Bischoff helped Rated-RKO defeat DX.

Since then, the rivalry between the two teams has only intensified. DX prevented Edge & Orton from winning the World Tag Team Championship the night after Cyber Sunday, but Rated-RKO ended up winning the gold one week later anyway.

DX may have gotten a measure of revenge at Survivor Series by captaining a team that defeated Edge & OrtonÂ’s team (in fact, shutting them out), but the World Tag Team Champions quickly struck back by destroying DXÂ’s friend Ric Flair.

So at New Year's Revolution, will D-Generation X put the ultimate stake in the hearts of Edge & Orton, or will Rated-RKO re-establish their dominance over HBK & The Game?

Intercontinental Championship
Steel Cage Match
Jeff Hardy(c) vs. Johnny Nitro

Jeff Hardy and Johnny Nitro will once again clash for the Intercontinental Championship at New YearÂ’s Revolution. This time, however, it will be inside a 15-foot high steel cage.

For the last few months, Hardy and Nitro have waged a vicious war centering on the Intercontinental Championship. Hardy won it from Nitro on the Oct. 2 Raw, with Nitro regaining it on Nov. 6. That reign was short-lived, however, as Hardy won the gold back the very next week in England, and one week after that, the two clashed in a vicious Ladder Match that saw Hardy retain his newly-won gold.

Tag team partners have also gotten involved in this rivalry as well; at Survivor Series, Hardy was on a team with brother Matt, CM Punk & DX that shut out Rated-RKO, Nitro, Gregory Helms & Mike Knox, and one week later, the Hardys defeated Nitro & Joey Mercury at ECW December to Dismember.

Finally, on the Dec. 11 Raw, Executive Assistant Jonathan Coachman announced the match for New YearÂ’s Revolution, saying that he would give Nitro another chance to prove to the world that he is a star. However, to get NitroÂ’s attention, he told him that the match would be a Steel Cage Match.

ItÂ’s a rivalry that has spanned four months, three pay-per-views, two brands and one piece of gold. Who will be left standing as Intercontinental Champion when the latest chapter of their rivalry is written inside the cage?

WomenÂ’s Championship Match
Mickie James(c) vs. Victoria

Victoria will start off 2007 with a chance at the gold against current WWE WomenÂ’s Champion Mickie James at New YearÂ’s Revolution. After enduring weeks of humiliation at the hands of her formal rival Lita, the talented Mickie was finally able to claim the gold by defeating her at Survivor Series. Victoria has been on a rampage as of late, arriving at each of her matches with a checklist of WWE Divas that she plans to defeat. After picking up wins over Candice, Maria and Torrie, Mickie is the only Superstar left on VictoriaÂ’s list. Will Victoria continue to rack up the wins when she faces Mickie live from Kansas City, Mo.? Will Mickie be able to retain her newly-won title? Order New Year's Revolution live on pay-per-view to find out.
