I was on the Phillips bandwagon from Day 1, because of what he will do to improve the defense. I was slightly excited with Rivera for a while until I saw his defense "perform" in the Super Bowl and heard that he would probably switch us back to the 4-3. (BOO!)
Phillips is a 3-4 guru with a slight history of success in the NFL. This team was built to win with defense and winning the time of possession battle. So it would make a whole lot more sense to bring in a 3-4 defensive guy to keep the team going in the direction that it was going. Bringing in an offensive guy wouldn't have solved anything because, quite frankly, the offense wasn't that much of a problem. A few tweaks here or there on the offensive line, and they'll maintain their stature as one of the top 5 or 10 offenses in the league. But the defense needed a major attitude change. (roy willimas im talking abotu you!) and that also starts with the guy running it. The Chargers led the league with 61 sacks last year. Just imagine what the cowboys defense could do with 50-55 sacks, considering that the secondary is light years better than San Diego's.
So I beleive this was a very good chocie.
