I also think that the fact that the players union (and the players themselves, by extension) were so vehemently opposed to steroid testing for so long left a sour taste in the mouth of baseball fans.

Like, there's a difference between breaking a rule (corked bat, spitballs, etc, which are all things that the public seems to forgive) and fighting tooth and nail to allow something that is not only cheating, but against the law as well. I think thats a major reason why steroid users in baseball are so vilified, while they kinda get a free pass in football
