Ok I'll take this.

Draws occur in "Domestic Leauge" games and in games in "group stages" of big competetion instead of 3 points being awarded to the winning team each team gets one point. As you can see Draws are not as advantagous to teams as if they score they gain 2 points rather than if they concede they drop 1. Main championships thoughout Europe etc. reward play over the year and not just a team that is on-form and injury-free at the end of the year (as your sports do with post season).

Cup competetions (Like from the second round of the world cup onwards) are knockout based over one game and in the event of a tie go into what we call extra-time (OT). 15 mins are then played to see if there is a winner. If not an additional 15 mins are played (double OT). You will hear this referred to as silver goal (for no apparent reason).Of course soccer players cannot continue playing OTs because soccer is athletic and doesn't involve stopping to reset every 6 seconds. If scores are still tied a series of 5 penalty kicks will be taken to determine a winner. If scores are still tied penalties will be taken 1 at a time until one team scores and the other misses. (sudden death).

Champions Leauge is a little different as Games between the group stages and the final are played two-legged one home and one away (or in american a 2 game series is played with one on the road). The team to go through is decided by the tally of goals scored over the two legs. So if team A win 3-1 then lose 2-1 they will go through as 4-3 winners. In the event of a tie in the first instance goals away from home will be counted and if a team has scored more away goals they will go thru. If the away goals are tied the teams will will 2x15 minute halves and then penalties. The champions leauge final is a single match at a neutral ground and is decided on the night with the same criteria as a world cup game.

I would like to point out that soccer is a game respected world wide except in Northern America were stop start games are preferred and in asia were religous hatred is preferred. If you need to know more about "soccer" ask a schoolgirl.

I had a sig, once.
