Vince Young/Reggie Bush

Why can't I be a sportswriter? Is it because I actually have some logic and common sense, and I wouldn't make outrageous statements just for the sake of making them? That must be it.

I just read an article by ESPN's resident moron Skip Bayless stating that taking Vince Young over Reggie Bush would be the 2006 equivalent of passing up on Michael Jordan in 1984.

Why is it that sportswriters have to take one game and always use it to blow everything out of proportion? Reggie Bush won the Heisman Trophy, and he did that while splitting carries! He averaged like 8 yards per carry for the entire season. His partner in the backfield, LenDale White, broke the USC TD recrod, and he's only a junior. Could you imagine the numbers Bush would have put up if White wasn't around?

So how could anybody say that drafting Bush over Young is a collossal mistake? Now, I'm not saying that Young is an inferior player, or even that he doesnt deserve to go #1, because he might. But to say that passing up on Young would be a terrible is absolutely moronic.

For one thing, QB is the most difficult position to predict how well a college player will perform in the pros. Remember how Michael Vick was supposed to revolutionize the game? That hasnt exactly happened now, has it? Alex Smith looked pretty poor in his first season, and we're still waiting for Eli to realize his potential. In fact, here are some of the recent first round QBs...

Alex Smith
Aaron Rodgers
Eli Manning
Philip Rivers
Ben Roethlisberger
JP Losman
Carson Palmer
Byron Leftwich
Kyle Boller
Rex Grossman
David Carr
Joey Harrington
Patrick Ramsey
Micahel Vick
Chad Pennington
Tim Couch
Donovan McNabb
Akili Smith
Daunte Culpepper
Cade McNown
Peyton Manning
Ryan Leaf
Jim Druckenmiller

Get the point? There are far more QB busts (Leaf, Akili Smith, Couch) than successes (Peyton, McNabb). Reggie Bush is a MUCH safer bet than Vince Young.

Also, let the record show, that the Houston Rockets, who ironically had the first overall pick in Jordan's year (ironic because it's another Houston team faced with this dilemma this year), selected future Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon who led them to 2 World Championships. not too shabby. not Jordan, of course, but I'm sure they'll take it.

Skip Bayless sucks. How can he still be employed?
