If you have four wide receivers how can you keep the five offensive linesman who I take it are the centre, two guards and two tackles. The obvious one you drop out I guess is the tight end, is that right? Who else do you drop out, one of the full back or running back, is that right? |
Yes...you have to drop someone from one of the other positions. It's usually the tight end or the fullback when they add extra recievers

2 - I take it the team on defense knows what the formation of the team on offense is taking up before they make a play. So for example, if a team lines up on offense and has three wide receivers out there, then the team on defense can say "oh I get'cha, well in that case we're going to have three cornerbacks to mark you bastards"
|
Yes...one of the assistant coaches who is in charge of the defense usually watches the other team to see if they are changing the personnel on the field, and the defense will adjust accordingly

3 - Explain the "safety" points again, is this if you are on defense but you somehow tackle your opponent in their own end zone?
|
That's exactly it. It doesnt happen very often, since most teams are good enough to not allow themselves to be in that position

4 - If the game goes to extra time you say the first team to score wins. Does it matter what they score. Could it just be a field goal?
|
It does not matter what they score, touchdown, field goal, or safety. Usually teams settle for a field goal, because when they get close enough to kick an easy field goal, they don't want to take the risk or running more plays, and having maybe an interception or a fumble.

5 - Is there any way that you can get sent off for ill discipline on the field? Are you then able to replace that guy if that can happen, or do you have to play with one less guy.
|
You can get thrown out of the game, but it would have to be something REALLY bad. Since it's such a physical game, there's a fine line between what's acceptable and what isn't. Most of the time, if you do something bad, your team will get charged with a 15-yard penalty. And if a player does get ejected, the team can replace him. It's always 11 on 11

6 - How many time outs can each team call?
|
3 in each half, and unused time outs do not carry over to the 2nd half

7 - Do teams usually go for the 2 point or the 1 point conversion?
|
Usually the 1-point. It's succesful almost every time, whereas the 2-point is successful about 50% of the time.

8 - Explain the leagues to me. Are there two of them? How does that work. Is it the same teams each year in each league? Is there a play off to lead towards the Superbowl?
|
There is one big league...the NFL (National Football League).
Within the NFL, there are two conferences: The AFC and NFC.
Each conference has four divisions: East, West, North, and South.
The winner of each division makes the playoffs. Also, the two best non-division-winners in each conference make the playoffs. So, it is 12 teams total, 6 in each conference. As such, the top 2 teams in each conference get to skip the first round of the playoffs (obviously, a HUGE advantage). The playoffs are basically a single elimination tournament...one loss and you're done. And the Super Bowl is one team from the NFC, and one team from the AFC.

9 - So there are 11 players on the field from each team. 11 defense players and 11 offense players. How many other players are on the bench, for example are there 44 players in total or something just in case you need replacements on?
|
The roster is composed of 53 players. There's usually at least one back-up at each position, except there's only one punter and one kicker. There are usually 3 quarterbacks on the roster also.

10 - How does the draft thing work? The best players from collegiate teams go to the Pros or something?
|
The draft is designed to improve the poorer teams, so that the same teams don't win every year. Basically, any person who is at least 3 years removed from high school can declare themselves eligible for the draft. The way it works is that the team with the worst record this year gets the first pick in the draft, the team with the second worst record gets the second pick, and so on. There are seven rounds in total. Also, draft picks can be traded, either for other draft picks, or for actual players.

11 - How many points do you get for a win in your league? Do you get any bonus points for losing?
|
No point system...it's just a win is a win is a win. You get nothing for a loss.

12 - Do some players multitask. For example is it uncommon to see a player who's a wide receiver one day become a tight end or a full back?
|
It happens from time to time, but usually not. Most NFL coaches prefer their players to focus all their attention on one position, to maximize their potential at that one position. Players will occasionally multi-task, but not that often.
