| I was never beaten as a child, but I am sorta with LadyX on this one. But only for serious stuff. Like if my child were to accidentally throw a ball through a window I wouldn't care, but if I caught them smoking or doing drugs they would cop it. I know sitting them down and talking to them about it could or taking away their TV or something like that would seem like enough. But the child may see it as getting off quite easy and would be more likely to try it again. But if you give no warning and give the kid the old cane to the palm or back of the legs, it will show him who's boss and teach him not to fuck around with drugs again.
