| St. Louis signs six-year, $31.5M deal with Lightning. (NHL) The dust has settled in Tampa Bay.
The Lightning signed Martin St. Louis to a six-year, $31.5 million deal on Wednesday with an average annual salary of $5.25 million.
St. Louis, the reigning NHL scoring champ and most valuable player, was a restricted free agent.
"I've said it many times in the past and I continue to maintain that Martin St. Louis is the 'heart and soul' of our hockey team," Feaster said. "The fact that he was willing to take less and give up the chance to explore unrestricted free agency demonstrates his commitment to our team, his teammates, our franchise and our incredible fans."
The signing ends a back-and-forth war of words between St. Louis' agent Lewis Gross and GM Jay Feaster. St. Louis and Gross were taken back by the Lightning's earlier signing of teammate Vincent Lecavalier, who received a four-year, $27.5 million pact.
With St. Louis and Lecavalier locked up, the questions now turn to Brad Richards, a restricted free agent next season after earning $3.4 million this season. He become an unrestricted free agent after the 2006-07 season. |
