What's funny is that if you look at the standings since '90, the Sox have finished first three times (including the '94 strike year) and I believe second every other year except for one third place. And every year they didn't come in first, by the end of May we just knew and we dealt with it and moved on to laugh at the Cub fans. Remember the so-called "White Flag" trade of '97? Where Reinsdorf said anyone who thought they could catch the Indians was crazy (even though they were only 3.5 games out), and then traded away most of the better players? He was right. We could have been tied with Cleveland at that point and it still wouldn't have mattered. The only reason the Sox were just 3.5 out was because Cleveland was playing poorly, not because we were playing that well. But again, Sox fans identify this and accept it.
I really wish MLB would realign so the Sox and Cubs were in the same division. I would love that sooooo much. I mean, its nice winning the 6 game series most years, but beating them 12 or so times a year and costing them the division? Priceless. |
