Karma, baby
When you let go of as many guys as Boston did, who were all integral parts of them winning the World Series, thats never a good sign
Pedro, Lowe, Cabrera, Roberts, Mientkiewicz.
So, by getting rid of Cabrera, Roberts, and Mientkiewicz, they're back to being the same slow, defensively-challenged team that played .500 ball in May, June, and July.
And how the hell do you get rid of Dave Roberts???? That man and that man alone is the reason why the Red Sox won the World Series. If he gets thrown out at second in game 4, Rivera closes that game and the Yankees sweep and play the Cards in the World Series.
As for the fielding point: 3 errors in the first 2 games. And their one excellent fielder, Johnny Damon, couldnt throw out my grandmother. And he's already commited an error.
Plus, there's the World Series hangover.
and the fact that Schilling, tough as he is, has a bum ankle, which isnt something a pitcher can fight through for an entire season. Clement looked like shit yesterday, and Wade Miller is out until at least the middle of February. Clement also has a career below-.500 record, and an ERA of 4.33 despite playing his entire career in the lighter-hitting NL. Even last year he was only 9-13! And he was pitching against other teams 3, 4, and 5 pitchers...usually the 4's and 5's
And David Wells is a fat fuck whose back will go out on you at the most inopportune time
The Red Sox can still mash, and the bullpen is solid (despite Foulke's blown save yesterday, I still think he's a great closer). I just think that they're set up for a disappointing season. And by disappointing I mean like 90-93 wins...but I think that, assuming the Yankees win the division for an 8th straight year, a team like Cleveland or Texas could sneak in and snatch the Wild Card away
