Seahawks | Mar. 7 - The Seahawks are the leading candidate to pull off a deal for Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. Seattle's interest in Surtain rose when starting CB Ken Lucas signed with the Panthers for six years and $36 million. According to the Post-Intelligencer, the Dolphins would likely demand a second-round pick. Surtain is believed to be seeking a signing bonus of at least $8 million. He's entering the final year of a contract that pays him $6.15 million in 2005 and has a cap number of $8.383 million. | | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Samari Rolle |

Cowboys | Mar. 7 - Cornerback Samari Rolle agreed to a six-year contract with the Ravens on Monday. The Chiefs appeared to be the favorites to land Rolle, but their interest cooled because of health concerns. During a routine physical last week, the Chiefs reportedly discovered that Rolle has a narrowing of the spinal column. Rolle, a 2000 Pro Bowl selection with the Titans, agreed to a six-year, $30.5 million contract that includes an $11 million signing bonus, according to ESPN.com's John Clayton. Rolle will replace Gary Baxter, who signed with the Browns. | | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Fred Smoot

Chiefs | Mar. 7 - Fred Smoot is expected to make his first visit as a free agent on Monday, though his agent declined to mention the interested parties, The Washington Post reports. The Chiefs and Jets are rumored to be among the contenders. According to The Post, the Redskins aren't likely to budge from their offer, which includes a $10 million signing bonus. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Plaxico Burress
Steelers |
| Giants
Vikings | Mar. 7 - Wide receiver Plaxico Burress will visit the Giants on Monday to discuss becoming the deep threat that Eli Manning so desperately needs. Burress' agent, Michael Harrison, said Burress, who has been talking with several teams including the Vikings, wants to go to a team with a good tight end, good running back and good quarterback. "They need a No. 1 receiver," Harrison said. "Plus, it's New York City and Plaxico is a very marketable guy." | | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Kelly Herndon |
| Ravens
Falcons | Mar. 7 - Restricted free-agent CB Kelly Herndon says the Ravens have made him an offer and that his agent could deliver a counterproposal as early as Monday, The Baltimore Sun reports. Herndon is scheduled to meet with the Falcons on Tuesday. "There are other teams out there, so I don't want to act like those are the only teams that I have a possibility of going to," Herndon told the newspaper. "But as far as Atlanta and Baltimore, with the caliber of teams they are, it's definitely a plus." | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Jim Miller
Bears |
| Giants | Mar. 7 - In their search for Eli Manning's backup, the Giants entertained quarterback Jim Miller on Sunday, The New York Post reports. Miller, 34, will undergo a physical on Monday.
"I would expect if things go well we'll be talking about a contract," Miller's agent, Joe Linta, told The Post. Miller, who's coming off a torn rotator cuff injury, hasn't thrown a pass in the NFL in three years. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Kevin Carter
Titans |
| Dolphins | Mar. 7 - Defensive tackle Kevin Carter, released by the Titans last month, reached a five-year, $30 million agreement with the Dolphins on Monday, ESPN.com's John Clayton reports. The 31-year-old Carter, who has never missed a game in his 10-year career, will make $10 million over the first two years of the contract and $16 million over the first three. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Kenoy Kennedy

Saints | Mar. 7 - After visiting the Lions, Kenoy Kennedy is scheduled to visit Miami, then Atlanta, The Denver Post reports. The Saints and Chiefs are also interested. Kennedy's agent, Vann McElroy, said he's still talking to the Broncos.
"The Broncos are still in it," McElroy told The Post. According to Booth Newspapers, Detroit will make a strong push to sign Kennedy because a trade for Jags safety Donovin Darius appears unlikely. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Rod Gardner
Redskins |
| Buccaneers
Ravens
Vikings
Chargers | Mar. 7 - Redskins WR Rod Gardner might be traded to Minnesota for a draft pick, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Vikings VP of football operations Rob Brzezinski confirmed he has had additional trade discussions since sending receiver Randy Moss to Oakland last week, but he would not comment specifically on Gardner. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Chike Okeafor |
| Broncos
Cardinals
Chiefs
Seahawks | Mar. 7 - Defensive end Chike Okeafor has contract offers from the Seahawks and Broncos, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. He spent Sunday discussing his options with his agent, Andrew Simms. "It won't take too long to make my decision," Okeafor told the newspaper. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Jeff Garcia
Browns |
| Broncos
Buccaneers
Lions | Mar. 7 - QB Jeff Garcia, released by Cleveland last month, arrived in Denver on Sunday for a second visit with the Broncos, The Denver Post reports. Garcia, 35, met with coach Mike Shanahan at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Feb. 26. The Lions and Bucs are also among the teams showing interest. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Jeb Putzier
Broncos |
| Jets | Mar. 7 - The Broncos have until Friday to match the Jets' offer sheet ($12.5 million, $2.5 million signing bonus) for tight end Jeb Putzier, The Denver Post reports. Denver will get a sixth-round draft choice if it elects not to match the offer, and if it does, a trade between the two teams might be possible. "We'll see what happens," Putzier told The Post. "Either way, whatever happens, I know I'll be in a good situation." | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Jay Fiedler |
| Bears
Giants | Mar. 7 - Jay Fiedler, who has already visited the Giants, is set to meet the Bears in Chicago on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The 31-year old Fiedler is still seeking a starting job. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Ron Dayne
Giants |
| Texans | Mar. 7 - Former Heisman winner Ron Dayne is scheduled to visit New Orleans on Tuesday, then Miami, The New York Post reports. Dayne had one touchdown and 179 yards rushing last season on 52 carries. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Brad Johnson
Buccaneers |
| Bears
Lions | Mar. 7 - The Bears are expected to meet quarterback Brad Johnson on Thursday, The Chicago Tribune reports. Johnson will visit the Lions on Wednesday. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Kendrell Bell
Steelers |
| Eagles | Mar. 4 - Bell was scheduled to visit the Eagles on Friday afternoon. Now that Jeremiah Trotter has has re-signed with Philadelphia, it's unclear if the Eagles still have interest in Bell. Bell, 26, is coming off a season in which he was limited to three games because of a recurring groin injury. He underwent surgery in October to repair a sports hernia. Bell was the NFL's defensive rookie of the year in 2001. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Travis Taylor
Ravens |
| Vikings | Mar. 4 - Wide receiver Travis Taylor, a disappointment during his five seasons in Baltimore, visited the Vikings on March 3.
The former 10th overall selection out of Florida has 204 career catches for 2,758 yards and 15 touchdowns. "Travis Taylor is a player that is intriguing," Vikings coach Mike Tice said. "He has not been explosive in this league. You look at that offense and see that not many people have been." | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Edgerrin James
Colts |
| Dolphins? | Mar. 4 - While some might think Edgerrin James' top priority is joining the Dolphins, James' biggest concern is finding a team willing to give him an acceptable long-term contract extension, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
"My main thing is playing football, making sure I've got a good deal in place and then going from there," James told the newspaper while visiting the University of Miami's on-campus Pro Day for NFL scouts. "Everything else is secondary. … I'm not going to say I'm zoned in on just one team."
James was recently named the Colts' franchise player, so the Dolphins would have to give the Colts two first-round picks to sign James. | | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Jerome Bettis
Steelers |
| Retirement? | Mar. 4 - Jerome Bettis has already agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Steelers, but the 33-year-old running back's decision to play his 13th season in the NFL might not come until June 1, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
However, he told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he's "leaning toward" coming back." Bettis said he will start working out next week to get an idea if his body can withstand the rigors of another season. "I want to come back, but I am realistic that the possibility exists [that he could retire]," he told The Tribune-Review. "I don't want to lead anyone astray. I'm optimistic, cautiously optimistic." | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Donovin Darius
Jaguars |
| ? | Mar. 4 - Safety Donovin Darius has been given permission by the Jaguars to seek a trade, The Florida Times-Union reports. Darius is the Jaguars' franchise player, so a trade is his only ticket out of Jacksonville.
"I believe there is a market out there for me," Darius said. "We'll find those deals and bring them back to the Jaguars and, hopefully, they'll make a business decision. They say they're building for the future and I'm not part of the future." If the Jaguars don't find the right deal for Darius – they reportedly want a first-round pick or a second-rounder and another pick in return – Darius will have no choice but to play for the Jags in '05 or lose almost $5 million. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Joe Jurevicius
Buccaneers |
| Giants? | Mar. 3 - The Giants are interested in signing Joe Jurevicius, but the veteran receiver doesn't appear ready to sever ties with the Buccaneers, despite being released by the team on March 1.
"[The interest] is very flattering," Jurevicius' agent, Neil Cornrich, told The Tampa Tribune, "but Joe savors his time in Tampa Bay and his contributions to the Super Bowl season. It's going to take something extra special to get him to leave." Jurevicius began his career with the Giants before joining the Bucs in 2002. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Wayne Chrebet
Jets |
| | Mar. 2 - Wayne Chrebet has received his $250,000 roster bonus, meaning he might somehow remain with the Jets despite rampant speculation to the contrary, The New York Post reports. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Orlando Pace
Rams |
| Giants? | Feb. 28 - Rams coach Mike Martz told The New York Daily News he has no intention of trading Pace, even though the Rams called the Giants last week to gauge their interest in the Pro Bowl left tackle. Pace, the Rams' franchise player, is slated to make $8.4 million in 2005. Any team interested in Pace would likely want to negotiate a long-term deal before making a trade. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Trevor Pryce
Broncos |
| ? | Feb. 28 - The Broncos have decided to shop Pryce, and as many as 10 teams are interested in acquiring the Pro Bowl DE, reports Pro Football Weekly. However, after the first week of free agency, the number of potential suitors could drop significantly. Salary-cap concerns (Pryce has a cap number of $9.16 million for '05) and age (Pryce turns 30 in August) are among the leading factors in to Denver's decision. The team also plans to switch to the 3-4 defense in 2005, and Pryce is better suited for the 4-3 alignment. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Travis Henry
Bills |
| Cardinals | Feb. 28 - Even though the Bills have given the Cardinals permission to arrange for Henry to visit, a trade between the two teams doesn't appear imminent, according to The Arizona Republic.
"We haven't had any talks beyond that," Buffalo president and GM told the paper.
It was previously reported that the Bills are working on a trade that would send Henry to Arizona in exchange for offensive tackle L.J. Shelton, who visited Buffalo and took a physical. However, because Henry has only one year left on his contract, the Cardinals would like to have him signed long term before pulling the trigger on a trade. Another hurdle could be Cardinals coach Dennis Green, who has always preferred speed over power backs. Henry might not be well-suited for the style of offense Green wants to implement. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | L.J. Shelton

Rams?
Buccaneers?
Bears? | Feb. 28 - The Cardinals have granted Shelton permission to seek a trade, and the left tackle has high value now that Walter Jones has signed a new contract with the Seahawks.
Shelton's most likely suitor appears to be Buffalo, but the Cardinals might be backing away from a proposed Shelton-for-Travis Henry swap because Henry has only one year left on his contract. Shelton recently visited Buffalo and underwent a physical. The Rams, Bucs and Bears are also reportedly interested in Shelton. |
