What does the arrival of The New Age Outlaw mean for BG James?
By Bill Banks
It wasn’t that long ago when BG James and The New Age Outlaw made up one of the most successful tag teams in wrestling history. During the fever pitch of the Monday Night Wars, the New Age Outlaws became household names – claiming titles, making money and ruling wrestling. While the Outlaws later went their separate ways, the millions of fans who witnessed their triumphs would never forget their legacy as a team.BG James went on to join TNA Wrestling, later forming the 3Live Kru with Konnan and Ron “The Truth” Killings. The group felt right at home for BG…Controvsery? Check. Fun? Check. Championships? Check. Competing with K-Dawg and The Truth was just like old times for BG James, and there were plenty of good times to be had in the years since.
Enter The New Age Outlaw in TNA…
At the Against All Odds Pay-Per-View, The Outlaw made his debut in TNA, assisting Jeff Jarrett in retaining his NWA World Heavyweight Title against Kevin Nash. The bout also saw BG James come to Nash’s aid as he tried to stop the interference of The New Age Outlaw. It was the first time BG James and The Outlaw had seen each other since their days as a team, and you could sense the electricity from the fans in the arena as they waited for something to happen between the former partners.
Something DID happen between BG and The Outlaw, but it didn’t happen that night and it didn’t involve a fight. Rather, the world had to wait until Friday’s Impact before another meeting between the former partners – and it gave us more questions rather than answers.
During Impact, a chance meeting took place in the backstage area between 3LK members BG and Konnan and The New Age Outlaw. Without a doubt, both BG and The Outlaw still had the Pay-Per-View on their mind when they crossed paths, and some issues had to be resolved between the two in private. It made an uncomfortable situation not only for Konnan, who probably doesn’t know what to make of all this – but for the fans as well. When BG walked off with The Outlaw, the man who served as Jeff Jarrett’s backup just a week prior, there may have been an uneasy feeling among many watching.
This isn’t to say BG James had ulterior motives in speaking to his former friend in private. For all we know, both just had some things to get off their chests before they once again went their separate ways. But one small questions remains – what would BG James have to say to The New Age Outlaw that he couldn’t have said in front of his current 3LK partner Konnan? Before the theories start to fly, consider the fact that BG and the 3Live Kru have long been enemies of Jeff Jarrett, who made it no secret he was responsible for bringing The New Age Outlaw to TNA. With BG and The Outlaw now on opposite sides of the battlefield, the past between them is just that – the past. BG has no reason to turn his back on his 3LK brothers, and The Outlaw is getting his pockets stuffed by the NWA World Heavyweight Champion.
But stranger things HAVE happened in the world of wrestling – perhaps that’s what was going through Konnan’s mind.
While K-Dawg respected BG’s opportunity to clear the air with The New Age Outlaw, he should also remind BG who his former partner now works for. Jeff Jarrett is all about remaining the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, and he’ll do anything in his power to keep it that way – including possibly using The New Age Outlaw to get in BG’s head. But BG and Konnan are too smart for that, and Jarrett should know better if that’s the case.
In fact, the 3Live Kru would love nothing better than the opportunity to help end Jeff Jarrett’s NWA World Heavyweight Title reign, which has been the object of assault by Director of Authority Dusty Rhodes in recent months. Whatever plan Jarrett may or may not have involving The Outlaw and any influence on BG, it won’t mean a thing if his reign falls to pieces. Jarrett is a world class champion, but a champion can only withstand so much ongoing punishment. After all that Jarrett has put the Kru through, they’ve taken great pride in watching him barely survive as champion. If and when someone does finally defeat Jarrett for the gold, chances are the 3LK will be the first to congratulate the winner.
And chances are, when that time comes, The New Age Outlaw will probably regret the side he’s chosen in TNA…
