My personal opinion is that the presence of guns does not lead to violence. Deeper sociological issues are what lead to violence, and the use of guns is only a by-product.

However, because of these social issues that need to be addressed, it would be better for society if guns were not so readily available. If it was more difficult to get your hands on a gun, it then becomes more difficult to commit crimes.

I also see no reason why anyone should own an assault weapon. The reason why people are allowed to carry guns is self-defense. An assault weapon is not a weapon used for self-defense. It is intended to spray bullets in a large area in a short amount of time, which does not constitute self-defense.
