I didnt see the play, but from i read, the play went something like this:

Brooks took the ball and was getting ready to throw a little screen pass to his running back, Deuce McAllister. Instead, he threw the ball to one of his offensive linemen, and the ,lneman was actually a little behind him (since he was forming the pocket), so it counts as a fumble, not an incomplete pass (a throw has to move forward to be considered a pass attempt) If an offensive lineman is the first player to touch the ball, its a penalty, so the lineman jumped out of the way, and the ball bounced backwards, and by the time the Saints recovered the ball, they were tackled for a 23-yard loss. It doesnt mean that Brooks sucks or anything, it just means that he made one of the stupidest plays of all time, by thinking his 300-pound lineman was actually his 200-pound running back.
