The Red Sox probably figured that they had enough hitting to win (Ortiz, Ramirez, Damon, Millar) but their defense was the worst in the league and was costing them games, so thats why the deal makes sense. Plus, they were gonna lose Nomar in the offseason anyway, and everybody else knew it, so the Sox had no leverage in trade negotiations

and of course, what happens yesterday? a Cabrera error costs the Red Sox a game
