Todd Bertuzzi charged with assault

i know this subject has been done to death already, but i just read on SI's website that charges were filed against Bertuzzi

My friends who are hockey fans say that what happens on the ice should stay on the ice, and theres no need for the authorities to get involved. They also say that things like this (and specifically the McSorley incident) are a way of preventing "goons" like Brashear from taking cheap shots on star players.

I'm not the hockey authority here on the board, but i was wondering how some of you guys feel about criminal charges being filed in response to something that happens in a game.
