I'm not saying that steroid use equates to 10 more feet of distance, I'm saying that hitting a homerung is all about timing and hitting the ball on the right part of the bat, meaning that some extra strength isn't going to make much difference if you hit the ball the right way, which Barry normally does when he hits a homerun. Strength does not equal distance when you're talking about hitting. Look at Brett Boone. I've seen that guys hit some bombs.

Of course strength does have something to do with homerun hitting, but I don't think steroid use would make *that* much difference. And to answer that question posed in your original post, no, I don't think the decline in homeruns has been a coincidence. Pitchers are just getting better and smarter. Looking at the two players idscussed in this post, both Giambi and Bonds had higher HR/AB in 2003 than they did in 2002. The quality of pitching is getting better and the big guys aren't getting pitched to as much.
