I've heard that Andre was a lot more impressive in the ring back in the 70s, when he was more mobile and would actually chain wrestle and such. How did the early Andre compare to what we say from the early 80s on?
Andre, even in his youth, would never have been mistaken for Steamboat. With that said, the Andre people saw in the 80's was a shadow of what he once was. The occasional dropkick wasn't out of the question for the big man. The same could be said for mat wrestling-Andre could hold his own.

The best run for Andre was, in my opinion, certainly the early days in the 70's. He was physically in much better shape, much much more mobile, and here's the key-he was a Special Attraction. He'd go from territory to territory, work for a week or 2, and he was gone.

Seeing a giant once in a while was a thing of wonder-seeing him on your TV every week (and seeing the pain he was in) took the wonder away.

Meaner than a rattlesnake, tougher than shoe leather, more dangerous than a hollowed-eyed scorpion, middle-aged and crazy, crazy like a fox.
