I think we underestimate how much the media really effects us. The way we talk, dress, act, and think is all effected by the media. The media has done extensive study into how people think and is using mind control to alter people's thinking. We can also blame the media's for the downgraded, selfish and shallow society we live in today with the similar ideologies they portray to the people. They are forcing people to be a certain someone and because of that they spend and spend in the hope that they will live the 'perfect' life the media portrays, but less money just leads to depression, and media companies get their pockets full of our money.

As Dakstang pointed out, its interesting to note media outlets also own other media companies. Time Warner, for example, is a great franchise in the media industry, it owns several newspapers and magazines, so it can portray the same ideology without people even realising they are buying products from the same organisation.
