Orton is a heel, so thats a bad comparison, and Trips doesn't job, period.
Cena has lost to JBL, Batista, Michaels, Show and a few others over the last year and is still credible enough to be a top guy. Not that I'm saying he will lose cleanly (though I'm not ruling it out), but the idea that somehow he "needs" to benefit from this is pretty far-fetched.
