I think it being put in the middle of the card really helps it's reputation. WWE didn't feel that it should go on last for some reason. Even though Undertaker won the Rumble, elected not to challenge Cena and the Raw main event was thrown together once Triple H got injured.

Going on in the middle of the card probably motivated Batista & Undertaker to do a little more to prove a point.

I also don't think people were expecting it to be great either, which certainly helps. Undertaker often had duff Mania matches with big, oafish wrestlers. The fact that he was facing one again but managed to have a quality match probably makes people enjoy it more than a match between two solid wrestlers.
