Bruce cleared to meet Sunderland
Wigan have given Sunderland the go-ahead to speak to their manager Steve Bruce about taking over as the new Black Cats boss, BBC Sport understands.
Bruce, 48, took over at Wigan in November 2007 and guided them to 11th in the Premier League this season.
"We understand that Wigan have given Sunderland permission to approach Steve Bruce," said BBC Radio 5 Live's senior football reporter Ian Dennis.
The Latics have not confirmed whether they have received an approach.
However Dennis said Wigan owner Dave Whelan would not allow Bruce to leave without a fight.
"Wigan paid Birmingham £3m for his services in November 2007 when he arrived and I think they would want at least that in return," Dennis said.
"If a suitable compensation package can be reached then Bruce will be charged with transforming a Sunderland side that narrowly avoided relegation.
