Heyman Wrestling Society

It all started during a meaningless twenty second segment on WWE's Monday Night RAW. Paul Heyman had seen bad angles and bad booking and some of the most offensive gimmicks and controversial moments, but this was just insulting his intelligence. Of course, this was nothing new. Wrestling had become so dreadful that it was a weekly colonoscopy as far as he was concerned. This was beyond painful to watch and he had simply had enough. When he left professional wrestling, he thought he had left it in good hands but that clearly wasn't the case. Unlike Barnum & Bailey, WWE was the most boring show on earth and he felt like sad clown after every show. TNA was just a debacle and embarrassing to watch both as a professional wrestling fan, as a human being, and as a multicellular organism. ROH had fired one of the few men he trusted in the wrestling business and was now being run by a man who thought people still gave a shit about Jerry Lynn while a complete donkey went around shouting "slap the porpoise". He cared too much for the sport, the art, and the spectacle to see it die a slow, painful death. He knew that there were others like him out there---Marks, smarks, columnists, bookers, and wrestlers alike! What was so difficult about putting on a pro wrestling show where as a viewer, you didn't have to hide your face in your hands in embarrassment?

Well, apparently it was very difficult, especially in these economic times. With so few wrestlers out there, Paul's attempts to quietly gather talent to start a promotion proved difficult. He was perhaps best known for turning unknown wrestlers into superstars, but how could he do that when there was no money out there to pay them? Well at the 2010 Royal Rumble, little did Paul Heyman know that noneotherthan Randy Orton would save the day. Orton was fired from WWE the day following the Royal Rumble, with the company citing no specific reasons other than "he had struck out a long time ago and was long overdue." However, many believed that there was a huge fight backstage between Orton and Triple H. The two most common reasons for the alleged fights are that Triple H refused to lose to Orton at Wrestlemania, and the other being that Randy Orton slept with Triple H's wife Stephanie McMahon. While the latter would seem unrealistic, if not completely unbelievable, some reputable sources reporting makes the story possible. Until a WWE representative denies the allegations (which none have), then the story is certainly possible. Though with even more insane stories circulating through the interwebs, who knows what truly happened.

Nonetheless, Orton took a brief hiatus before signing with New Japan Pro Wrestling a little more than a month later. After competing for the company for around six months, Orton was suspended without pay by New Japan after disgracing the promotion when he punted All Japan Pro Wrestling legend Keiji Mutoh, knocking him into a coma and into retirement. Orton was granted permission to wrestle for other companies, which still boggles the minds of critics and fans. Why keep him around? Why not just fire his ass? Well apparently they felt if he could just fix his issues and get his act together, he could be one of the best gaijin Japan ever saw. Orton wrestled with rival promotion NOAH (a promotion he had helped fight during a brief spat between them and New Japan), but NOAH stopped booking Randy after only two shows, with one wrestler anonymously stating that Randy Orton was a locker room cancer. DDT (Dramatic Dream Team) and Dragon Gate didn't want him, feeling that he didn't fit their style nor were they exactly happy with how they treated a legend like Keiji Mutoh. He resorted to competing for BJW, where he earned scars in deathmatch feuds with Yuko Miyamoto and Takashi Sasaki, before having a pure wrestling-based feud with Daisuke Sekimoto. Eventually they had to release him too, though they explained that it was because they couldn't afford him, not because he had a backstage incident. Some wondered why he didn't just go to TNA, who were throwing him truckloads of cash. Before leaving for New Japan, Randy made a statement at a collaboration show his father was running back in Missouri that he would never sign with TNA. "TNA is a complete and utter joke."

Meanwhile, Paul Heyman was trying to broker out a deal with New Japan to buy out Randy Orton's contract, feeling that Orton still had a lot of "heat" to him as it was and that people would buy a ticket to see what he would do next. New Japan was skeptical and wondered why he would even risk the chance, but Heyman said: "Listen, I dealt with a bunch of drug addicts, rejects, and nobodies and turned them into superstars. You think I can't handle Randy Orton?" New Japan was more interested in what he had planned overall, not just Randy Orton. Heyman said that he had already gotten commitments to his soon-to-be company from recently-released Evan Bourne, Samoa Joe, Alex Shelley, Shelton Benjamin, Chris Sabin, and Homicide. He then mentioned up-and-comers such as Shikari Kazimir, Kyle Korvo, Jack Spradlin, Lonestar, and Brandon Banks. Two names jumped out at New Japan: Samoa Joe and Lonestar. They had been trying to book Lonestar in a match against Hiroshi Tanahashi for months now after Lonestar's successful tour last year. Samoa Joe? Nothing more need be said.

After all his business-related mistakes with ECW, Heyman had a lot of time to read up on business when he entered semi-retirement. He realized he was going to need leverage to get this deal done. He offered New Japan a Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Lonestar match on their very first show. While New Japan wanted that match to be in Japan, they were satisfied with that and worked out a deal with Heyman. Though Samoa Joe, Lonestar, and everyone else aside: New Japan was seeking two things: 1)... A way for Hiroshi Tanahashi to become a star in the United States (they didn't exactly appreciate Hiroshi Tanahashi being

nor TNA not using him at all) and 2)... To be rid of Randy Orton. They saw no improvement in Randy Orton's attitude whatsoever and he was costing them millions annually. They figured that funding a little company that would probably be dead in a couple of weeks would be worth it just to get Randy Orton off their backs.

It took Heyman another month to get more pieces set in place and call all the numbers a proper wrestling promoter should have in his phone book to get everything prepared. Setting up a full-fledged staff and championship committee, signing deals with venues to make them exclusive to HWS (some idiot from the championship committee named Anon came up with it. Heyman didn't care for it but everything else was taken. It was just a name, after all. It's what the name represents that matters), among many other things. By the end of February 2011, everything was set in place and all the stars were aligned. Heyman flipped open a page on his trusty notebook and began writing the first show: It All Begins.
